One Piece is getting a new anime adaptation from Wit Studio and Netflix

The One Piece manga is getting another anime adaptation. A new anime based on the manga series by Eiichiro Oda is coming to Netflix and will be animated by Wit, the studio behind Spy x Family and Attack on Titan’s first three seasons. Netflix announced the new anime remake on Sunday with a special announcement video.

The new series will be called The One Piece and it will follow the same story as the manga, starting with the East Blue saga. The show will also be made in partnership with Shueisha, Fuji Television Network, and Toei Animation Co., the studio that creates the currently running version of the One Piece anime.

While remaking the series while the original version is still airing may sound strange, it does make a lot of sense. One Piece may be a global phenomenon now, but it didn’t start that way, and much of the show was produced under a slightly more limited budget by Toei and with older animation techniques.

With Wit, one of the most well-respected anime studios working at the moment, One Piece is likely getting its essential version with high quality animation right from the start. Toei’s version of the story also has a substantial amount of filler in the story, which Wit might cut out for its own adaptation.

There’s no release date for The One Piece yet, and no word on whether or not the series will use the same voice cast as the original anime or not. It also seems that the Toei version of the anime, which just reached the end of the Wano saga, will continue airing as well.
